Defiance Look to Take Cheney Stadium Attack on Road

Road match on short rest will challenge Tacoma.

Both sides in Wednesday’s action drew over the weekend. LA Galaxy II were at home and tied SoCal rivals Orange County SC 2-2 on Saturday. Tacoma Defiance were level 3-3 with Fresno FC on Sunday. With Los Dos at home and an extra day of rest they should be a bit less stressed in the double-game week.

Defiance assistant coach Wade Webber promised squad rotation for the 7:30 p.m. match (ESPN+).

“We also know we had guys that didn’t play a lot of minutes today. We will rotate the squad. We know that Wednesday we have to go to LA with a short turnaround. It’s going to be trying.”

The goal on the short trip is to continue the points streak. Midfielder Jesse Daley is focused on accruing points (yes, plural).

“We’ve just got to build on this. We can’t pat ourselves on the back with those two results. We’ve got to go to LA now and get a good result and then come back home and hopefully turn it on in front of the home fans.”

Taking Scoring on the Road

After their season-high 3 goals, there is confidence in the clubhouse for Tacoma Defiance. Daley is proud of the talent in the attacking band.

“It’s clear that the talent we have all over the park, and especially in the final third, we’ve got lots of good players. To score three goals? It’s fantastic.”

The coaches are going to focus on how to repeat what worked against a Fresno side that holds teams to less than a goal a game. Webber particularly liked the third goal.

“I think we can take the recreatable nature of those goals, particularly the third goal from the build. We have a centerback that finds a holding midfielder who finds a guy on the run and a quality finish. It can be that simple.”

Tacoma will have to work hard on their own defense in a match that should feature multiple goals. Defiance look to assert themselves on the road and notch their first win of 2019 away from home.

“We’re not afraid of LA. We’re going to go down there with the belief that we can get a result – points.”
