Ask the greats of Tacoma, and they’ll tell you that success has no off-season. For players like Danny Robles, there are no winter months to recover. It’s about grinding through all four seasons, and you can rest when the job is complete. Or the trophy has been hoisted. The Tacoma Defiance season is over, so how do these players play and continue their development?
Four of Defiance’s teens are continuing their development playing for the Sounders Academy U-19s. Those pros are dominating.
All attackers, they have 6 goals in eleven appearances. Three of the four players played in the October 20 win over the LA Galaxy, a 4-0 drubbing. The Sounders U-19s also beat Sacramento Republic 4-1 and De Anza Force 3-1 since the end of the Defiance season.
Alec Diaz leads the group with 3 goals in 160 minutes of play.
Marlon Vargas collected a goal and an assist in the Tacoma win over Austin Bold and followed it up the next day with a goal in Academy action. He has 2 goals total in the past two weeks. Ray Serrano also scored with the U-19s with a goal in 125 minutes of play.
Performance With Sounders Academy Since Defiance Season End
These players are all pros. They dip down into the Academy to get minutes, to gain confidence, or work on specific techniques in a different environment. This integration of Development both at the USL Championship and US Soccer Development Academy levels means that the Sounders FC Development staff lead by Director of Player Development Marc Nicholls and Tacoma Defiance Head Coach & Academy Director of Coaching Chris Little have flexibility in the individualized training plans for their younger professional talents.
The Sounders U-19s are 5-1-3, +8 in their 2019-20 season. The leading scorer is Diaz with 6 goals in one sub and five starting appearances. Their next matches are Saturday November 9 against San Diego Surf and Sunday November 10 versus FC Golden State. Both games are at Starfire.
