He had just returned to the region that raised him. It was a homecoming seemingly written in the stars. Then a global pandemic broke out. Taylor Mueller completed his house hunt and is now spending most of his non-soccer time unpacking boxes and building a fence for his two dogs.
At 31, married, and with local family in Enumclaw, Mueller’s situation is singular among his Tacoma Defiance teammates. There are household projects that come along with buying a new home, and those have been “a blessing in disguise” for the centerback.
“It’s a lot to process, but it’s been something I’ve been able to keep busy with.”
No longer in his family’s property with two houses, cows, three German Shepherds, and a bunch of chickens, Taylor and his wife are doing the “fun part” of unloading into their new place. The new home has given the two plenty of projects while Tacoma Defiance soccer continues remote training.
“It’s been really frustrating physically. You miss playing a ton and that’s been rough because we just got into our fitness levels. Now it’s back to square one.”
The Defiance workout sessions help maintain fitness, and he’s expanded what he does by practicing yoga. Taylor is not just doing the team stretch sessions, but also on his own and with his wife and sister. It helps his flexibility and his psychological being. The calming nature of the exercise helps during this time when life offers so many challenges beyond soccer.
There are also yoga sessions that builds the core strength of the USL minutes played leader, second team all-league recipient, and trophy winner.
If you are wandering the streets and parks around Enumclaw, you may just bump into one of the best centerbacks in USL history. He’ll be walking two dogs with his wife, building a fence, and enjoying the view of Mt. Rainier – one of the things he missed most in Charleston playing with the Battery.
In uncertain times, home is home. Taylor Mueller, just like all of us, is doing his best to make his as comfortable as possible, while taking this time to hopefully improve on the person he was before.
