Setting the stage

The 2027 Sprint Season will launch Major League Soccer's switch to a summer-to-spring calendar beginning in July 2027, aligning with the world’s top soccer leagues.

Before the calendar change, every team plays 14 regular-season games during the 2027 Sprint Season. They will play in-conference opponents only, including seven (7) home matches and seven (7) away matches.

The top eight (8) teams per conference will qualify for the Audi 2027 MLS Cup Playoffs, and MLS Cup presented by Audi is set for Memorial Day Weekend in May.

Following Decision Day, the top eight (8) teams in each conference qualify for the Audi 2027 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The postseason will be played in a single-elimination bracket format to determine a conference champion.

The Eastern Conference champion and Western Conference champion will meet in 2027 MLS Cup presented by Audi on Memorial Day Weekend.

The complete postseason schedule will be announced at a later date.

Schedule format & stakes

Each team will play only 14 intra-conference matches (7 home, 7 away) from mid-February through early May, giving every moment increased weight.

Due to the season’s exclusive intra-conference schedule and two 15-team conferences, two clubs will have a bye every matchday.

In addition to crowning an MLS Cup champion, the 2027 MLS Sprint Season will also have international competition implications, determining qualification for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup 2028.
